Just found this cool video made by an architectural washi design firm in New York. It gives a sense of how complex the traditional process really is. It’s not done much anymore—what is sold as washi today is highly industrialized paper. But you can still go to washi-making villages here and there in Japan and see people hand-making it the old way.
